Natural Disaster
Safety
Natural disasters come in many forms and degrees of severity. They seldom give warning and they call upon good judgment and ability to follow through with crisis plans. People with AD are at serious disadvantage. Their impairment in memory and reasoning severely limit their ability to act appropriately in crises.
It is always important to have a plan of action in case of fire, flood, tornado or other disaster. This plan can and should be utilized in the case of an emergency when time is short. It is particularly important if the AD person is still living alone.
The
following is a guide to help in the instance of such a disaster:
* Food, food
supplements, and water
* Medications
* Incontinence undergarments
* Hearing aid batteries
* Eye glasses
Be sure that
the AD person wears an identification bracelet stating "memory impairment"
should he or she become lost or disoriented during a crisis.
Under no circumstances should the AD person be left alone following a natural
disaster. Do not count on the individual to stay in one place while you
go for help.
I know no one wants to prepare for a natural disaster, and the above guide
may seem unecessary...but before you throw this paper out please ask yourself
the following questions...
Does the AD person:
If your loved
one cannot protect themselves in the event of a natural disaster, then
please...keep this paper handy!
